Weaving a Tasmanian Legacy with Waverley Mills

Country Road & Waverley Mills - Weaving a Tasmanian Legacy

Country Road 50 Years

Shot on palawa Country

Together with Australia's oldest working textile mill,
we've reissued an archival design from our 1994 collection.

Proudly crafted in Tasmania from start to finish, it's made using Tasmanian Merino wool, which is spun, woven and finished in-house at Waverley Mills. This throw is part of an exclusive collection to mark our 50th year. Designed in limited numbers, each piece is made to be loved and passed from one generation to another.

In 1994, Waverley Mills created a striped picnic rug for Country Road. Inspired by the classic design from the archives, we’ve reimagined it as a luxuriously soft throw with yarn-dyed stripes and a rolled fringe, made using locally sourced superfine Merino wool.

Our master weaver, Andrew, he's been here for over 30 years. He knows this place inside out. He knows our looms inside out. And he was one of the people, when he was a young fellow doing the weaving, who worked on the Country Road product that we've now recreated. Dave Giles-Kaye

Waverley Mills was established in 1874 on the banks of Distillery Creek in Launceston, Tasmania, and has supported the Australian wool industry for years, taking the fibre from bale to blanket, throw and scarf. Now celebrating its 150th anniversary, it has employed generations of skilled locals, many staying with the company for decades, passing on their knowledge to new employees and training them from scratch. In the same way, 60-year-old looms stand next to state-of-the-art modern textile equipment, with both working together to create the signature artistry and quality of Waverley Mills products.

One of the great things about working with Country Road is that we share a lot of very similar values, especially around craftsmanship. Dave Giles-Kaye

The making of our Reissue Throw at Waverley Mills.

The wool used in our Reissue Throw is sourced from Beaufront, a farm we've partnered with since 2017. For four generations, the von Bibra family has run sheep at Beaufront, working hard to produce high quality Merino wool. Owners Julian and Annabel have a strong sense of family heritage and connection to the local Midlands community and wool industry. For them, the reissue throw was an opportunity to embrace local manufacture and form deeper connections with their industry at the same time as showcasing their product to the Country Road community in a new way.

Annabel and Julian von Bibra, owners, Beaufront.
We've visited the mill, it's got so much history, connection to our industry and there we see our wool turned into a throw, that's super exciting. That really does focus you on what you're doing and drives that commitment to quality and being part of something bigger than just the farm. Julian Von Bibra
Owner, Beaufront
For our throw, Beaufront supplied superfine 18 micron wool.
