How do you approach styling denim?
A few simple steps will help guide you in choosing timeless denim pieces and styling them with ease.
First, it’s best to identify your personal style. You may gravitate towards certain silhouettes, colours and cuts, or you might prefer to layer different textures rather than only wearing one or two key pieces. Knowing how you approach dressing—and what makes you feel your best—will ensure you choose denim you’ll love and wear for seasons to come.
Second, take a closer look at your existing wardrobe—given denim is made to last, you may already own some great denim staples you’ve had for years. Then think about what pieces might be missing or which existing items may no longer fit or work with your style. From there, you can start to think about the denim items you want to add, keep or donate.
Read on to discover our edit of six essential denim items, how to style them, and some simple ways to take care of your denim so it lasts for years to come.
The Denim Jean
It goes without saying every wardrobe should have a staple denim jean. There’s very little you can’t wear with a jean—from a white T-Shirt to a chunky knit, almost everything pairs well with it. When it comes to a colourway, choosing a mid-blue wash jean will work the hardest with your existing wardrobe pieces; white, black and aged soft wash are great colours, too. A high-waisted style like a high rise jean will flatter the body and provide comfort. As for the cut, a straight leg offers an elongated silhouette that can be paired with a long or short top and look effortless with a blazer and loafer, for example. You might prefer a slim fit or wide leg instead, or you could opt for a mid waist style for a perfectly eased silhouette—ultimately it comes down to personal preference and style.

The Denim Skirt
A signature style that can transition from workdays to evenings with ease, a denim skirt is the cornerstone for year-round dressing. From mini to midi length and the comeback of the maxi skirt, there are multiple styles to choose from. A versatile A-line silhouette with a cinched high waist will cut a flattering shape—while five-pocket styling, a flared bottom, godet detailing or a split at the front all add a subtle detail that draws focus. A longer denim skirt—like a maxi—offers style and warmth during the winter months and can be effortlessly dressed up with an oversized blazer and leather boot, and dressed down with a sweat and sneaker for weekend dressing.

The Denim Dress
Not to be overlooked during the winter months, a denim dress can be worn multiple ways and quickly become a staple in your capsule wardrobe all year ’round. Try pairing it with full-length tights or tall boots for the evening or any occasion you want to elevate this everyday staple. You could even add a gold hoop earring and layer a well-crafted coat for a special event. Adding a similar-coloured denim jean underneath your denim dress is a simple way to elevate your casual look, too. Try adding a pop of bold colour to this staple by draping a knit over your shoulders for effortless layering. If you want to achieve an ‘oversized’ look, simply size up.

The Denim Coat
A well-crafted denim coat is a sophisticated and unexpected way to approach denim—and a finishing touch that elongates any outfit. Able to be worn over multiple layers, a nicely tailored denim coat in a classic silhouette offers a lightweight layer, providing an understated pop of colour. This capsule wardrobe essential can be styled in multiple ways—try wearing it with a blouse and neutral tailored pant and a ballet flat for a considered outfit for every day. Or style it with a long knit dress, an accessory of your choice and a tall boot for a more formal occasion.

Alternatively, you could wear a chambray shirt with a denim jean for a double denim look that highlights multiple tones and textures. It’s a timeless piece that’s already proven it can be worn for years to come.

The Shacket
As the name suggests, this wardrobe essential blurs the line between a denim shirt and a jacket. Consider the shacket an easy ‘throw on’ denim shirt or an added mid-weight layer to your outfit during the cooler months. Opting for a tailored design that’s cut in a relaxed fit ensures a shacket can be the main focus of your outfit. Simply style a shacket with a tailored pant and simple gold accessories for an understated look. Alternatively, you could wear it unbuttoned over a plain top with a mid-length skirt and a loafer for a relaxed look. For those looking to make a statement, try matching a shacket with the same colour denim pant for a double denim look.

How to care for denim
We’ve put together some simple tips on how to care for and store your denim so you can enjoy it for many seasons.
First, always read the care label on your denim in case there are any special instructions. Second, wash your denim infrequently. Generally speaking, spritzing, airing and spot-cleaning are sufficient ways to keep your denim fresh.
When you do wash your denim, fold your garment inside out with the zipper and buttons done up to protect the outer surface from fading and friction. Wash with cold water (up to 30° celsius) and use a gentle cycle to prevent shrinking and colour loss—and opt for gentle detergent. Avoid using a dryer, as the heat can cause shrinkage and damage. Instead, air dry your denim clothes by laying them flat or hanging them to preserve their shape.
Finally, iron or steam your denim inside out to prevent colour fade—and it’s best to hang your denim (even a jean) to maintain its shape.
